Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

Africa was more wonderful than I could have ever imagined. Our first night on safari was in Samburu. Samburu National Reserve is located in the northern part of Kenya on the Ewaso Ng'iro river. The camp shown below is the Elephant Bedroom Camp which is a very appropriate name since one night we had two elephants sleep right outside our tent; it was certainly a very exciting part of our trip. The Masai chief pictured was on the tv show Survivor. Notice the style details such as his 'ok' belt, the beautiful fabrics and the pattern mixing. How to make a Fig Sandwich

One of my favorite breakfast restaurants in New York City is Le Pain Quotidien. I almost always order the same thing which is a fig and ricotta open faced sandwich. Here is my interpretation.

- fresh multigrain bread.

- fresh ricotta cheese....sometimes you can find it at Whole Foods. If not, a packaged version will do.

- any kind of fresh figs sliced

- high quality honey to drizzle on the top

Feed the Soul....Half the Sky

Everyone should read  Half the Sky by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. In 2009, Nicholas and Sheryl, New York Times correspondents, published this book. They have interviewed and documented stories about "the oppression of women and girls in the developing world." It is one heart-wrenching story after another. The women they write about have extraordinary strength. Tonight on PBS at 9pm eastern they will air the documentary Half The Sky. If you are unable to watch the documentary this evening, please go to the PBS website listed above and watch the clips. You can also order the book and the dvd at amazon. To join the movement or learn more about it, please go to the website .  It is inspiring what Nicholas and Sheryl have accomplished since they published Half The Sky and what they have done for women and girls. We all can make a difference and every gesture big or small counts. In the back of the book they list many ways one can get involved. When woman are empowered, everyone wins.

How to add the leather trend to your wardrobe

Leather is a popular fabric in both the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 collections. Two years ago, Celine was one of the designers that pioneered the leather trend. Today, we are seeing leather interpreted in a new fresh way. Leather is now lightweight and very soft. Designers are using different techniques such as laser cutting, basket weaving and pleating. Thakoon is showing leather in amazing colors such as red, orange and purple. Celine. The gathered neckline makes this blouse modern.Celine. Bazaar Miami

Jose Andre's is 43 years old, owns 14 restaurants, and is a winner of the 2011 James Beard award. Now he can also add dean of Spanish Studies at the International Culinary Center of Manhattan to his resume. Jose's focus is Putting Spain Back in Spanish Food. Andre's is not your typical Spanish chef. Dining at one of his restaurants is an innovative culinary experience. In my post about Washington D.C. I mentioned one of my favorite Jose Andre's restaurants Zaytinya. Recently I had the pleasure dining at another one of Andre's establishments Bazaar Miami. The cusine is what I would describe as deconstructed and innovative. Dragon Fruit Ceviche...tuna, pecans, lime and hibiscus. Delicious.Coquetas de Pollo...chicken be'chamel fritters.Ribs and mashed potatoesCuban coffee ice cream with dark-chocolate mousse cake.

The atmosphere was fun and festive and the food is really creative. It was an unusual dining experience. I can not wait to go back and try some of the little sandwiches. Have you eaten at any of Jose's restaurants? Leave a comment and let me know.

How to make roasted plums

My favorite way to cook plums is to roast them. I prefer roasted plums to eating them raw because they have a deeper flavor. During this time of year, when plums are so plentiful, I always have a container of roasted plums handy. You can eat them plain, with yogurt, with oatmeal or with ice cream.

A few years ago a friend gave me this easy recipe:

Slice the plums

Add juice of one lemon

Sprinkle with nutmeg

Add sugar or agave nectar (optional)

Roast for 20-30 minutes at 350 degrees

Let cool and enjoy.

The Wall Street journal had an article A Plum Assignment in the September 1st weekend edition. Gail Monaghan suggests caramelizing plums. She includes a recipe for a Caramelized Plum, Rosemary and Polenta Pound Cake. The combination of the plums and rosemary sound interesting. I will try it out and let you know if it is a keeper.

Beasts of the Southern Wild

If you have not already fallen in love with Hushpuppy, aka Quvenzhane` Wallis,  and Wink, aka Dwight Henry,you must see the award winning movie Beasts of the Southern Wild. The movie is directed and co-written by Behn Zeitlin, a 29 year old visionary. Behn created this masterpiece without any professional actors. It is a low budget film with a big message. Hushpuppy reminds us that "we are a little piece of a big, big universe." July

Only a week left in July...where has the time gone? I was in Minnesota for 3 weeks and had grand ideas of blogging weekly. However, the internet would not cooperate. I found plenty of time to read a few books and watch some movies. Here are some highlights from my month.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton.

In the novel, a child is found abandoned on a ship heading for Australia during WWI. The story covers three generations and takes place not only in Australia, but also the Cornish Coast of England. The Book Of Negroes by Lawrence Hill.

This is a historical novel that begins in the late 1700's. It is the story of Aminato Diallo and her journey from a small village in Africa to her life as a slave.

Moonrise Kingdom.

This movie takes you straight back to 1965. Every detail in film is stylized. Another great Wes Anderson film.Intouchables...based on a true story.

This movie touches all emotions. Omar Sy is amazing and some of the music is by Earth Wind and Fire. What more could you want in a film?

The First Grader....Based on a true story

The story of Maruge, an eighty+ year old Mau Mau veteran who is desperate to learn how to read. Millionairess.... Sophie Loren and Peter Sellers.

In this light and entertaining movie, the wardrobe of Sopie Loren is classically stunning. This will be added to my list of fashion movies. A new addition to my blogroll is Cookie + Kate.

Heidi Larsen has created Foodie Crush an online magazine that celebrates food blogs. Look at the article "Summer in a Jar".  What a creative and easy summer idea!

How to make Ina Garten's stewed berries

Ina Garten has created the best "sure thing" recipes. Her cookbooks are easy to follow and all of your creations are guaranteed to be delicious. In her family style cookbook she has a recipe for stewed berries (page 148) . This has become one of my families favorite  desserts. A friend of mine served the stewed berries over ice cream a few months ago. I have not stopped making them since. I double the recipe so that I always have an extra container on hand. Currently the berries are so sweet that I only need to add a 1/2 cup of sugar. You can serve this over ice cream or poundcake.The recipe is as follows: 3 1/2 pints of fresh raspberries

2 1/2 pints of fresh blueberries

1 1/2 cups of sugar

Combine 2 1/2 pints of raspberries, all the blueberries, sugar and 3/4 cup water in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and cook uncovered for 10-12 minutes. Take off the heat and add remaining raspberries. Serve warm on ice cream. I also sometimes add blackberries.

This is certainly going to be one of my Fourth of July desserts. X

Spring

We all have places where we have traveled to that feel special, like a part of our soul. Whether we just arrived there for the first time or we visit frequently, these places have special meaning. Northern Minnesota will always have a special place in my heart. Living in Florida, I do not get to experience an "authentic" spring. Being present on this day allowed me to pause and appreciate nature.

How to make a green juice

Recently, friends have been inquiring about my daily juicing regime. I have been drinking a green juice daily for the past 6 years. I feel better when I eat healthy foods and have more energy when I have a green drink. I prefer to have my drink in the morning but you can have it whenever you want.It is a great way to get extra fruits, veggies, minerals and vitamins into your system. I am also hoping it will keep me young!

First, I started making my green drink in a blender. This way you get the benefits of all the fiber but the drink is more like a smoothy. Currently, I use the Breville juicer. It has a large feed tube so you are not spending a lot of time prepping your fruits and veggies. I also want to buy a Vitamix for juicing. This is a great option if you want a combination between a blender and a juicer. One can also make soups in the vitamix. There are endless variations of a green drink but here is my go to recipe:

5 leaves and stems of Kale(any variety) 1 cucumber peeled if not organic 1 knob of fresh ginger root 1 lemon( the ends and the peel removed) 3-4 stalks of celery 1 green granny smith apple A bunch of parsley *All ingredients should be organic if possible. The fresher the produce the better the drink.

Parasutra yoga offers a day of juicing every Thursday. Tracy Hritz, a licensed nutritionist, creates a variety of four delicious juices. In Miami, Coconut Grove Organic Market offers a wide variety of fresh pressed juices every Saturday. In New York City, I recommend The Juice Press and Organic Avenue. Both of these establishments will also ship.

Elsa Schiaparelli

Coco Chanel's main rival, Elsa Schiaparelli, has been receiving a lot of press lately. The Metropolitan Museum in New York City currently has an exhibit on Miuccia Prada and Elsa Schiaparelli called Impossible Conversation. Prada is a household name but few are familiar with Elsa Schiaparelli. Elsa was born in Rome and moved to Paris in her late 20's. She started as a knitwear designer and in 1927 her collection was featured in Vogue magazine. In 1928 she started designing sportswear inspired by American woman. By 1933 she was creating evening dresses. Elsa found that her evening gowns were easily being copied worldwide. This lead Schiaparelli to combine her two passions, art and fashion. She proceeded to work with artist friends such as Salvador Dali, Alberto Giacometti and Jean Cocteau. Her designs were whimsical and each fashion show was an art exhibit; this was an extremely unique concept during this time. Schiaparelli designs were known for shoulder pads, colored zippers and creative buttons. She designed for  Zsa Zsa Gabor, Mae West, Katherine Hepburn and Wallis Simpson (Duchess of Windsor). Has any one seen the exhibit? Please let me know what you thought.   X  [slideshow]

How to wear turtlenecks in a stylish manner

It does not matter what season it is, I am always drawn to wear a turtleneck. Diane Keaton gave the white turtleneck a new meaning in the movie Somethings Gotta Give. My memory of Audrey Hepburn is always in a black turtleneck with capri pants. It is such a classic look.  From the Metropolitan Ball to the Louis Vuitton Fall 2012 fashion show, I have been noticing a lot of turtlenecks in fashion lately. Next time you go to put on a sweater, think about wearing a turtleneck. Do not only wear turtlenecks in the winter. Mix it up a little.

Enrique Norten of Ten Arquitectos

Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I will attend an architectural exhibit or go to a lecture. Recently, I had the privilege of attending  a preservation lecture by Enrique Norten. Of the buildings he has restored, the Chopo Museum in Mexico City was my favorite. I am always inspired when there is a combination of  old and new. His work was described as "alive never cold, urban yet light and elegant but great."

These images are of the preservation project completed by Ten Arquitectos.

This is an original cast iron structure that was shipped from Germany. It is the only cast iron building in Mexico City.

Today this building houses the Chopo Contemporary Art Museum. Mr. Norten  preserved the existing structure and added the new structure within the interior; this enabled the existing  building to become part of the museum's collection.

My favorite tea

Some may swoon when they receive a box from Hermes Or perhaps a box from Tiffany's.

My favorite box to receive is from Bellocq Tea'sI have never been a coffee drinker ,however, I am a tea person. I am always looking for flavorful, interesting tea blends. I found Bellocq tea's on Grant K Gibson's blog . Bellocq relocated from Kings Road in London to  Greenpoint, New York.

Two of the founders were previously affiliated with Martha Stewart Living. It is not a surprise that there is a strong attention to detail.I love the bright yellow box and canister. All the teas are handcrafted  blends and some are organic. Currently, I am  enjoying  Siam Basil Lemongrass, Le Hammeau',Little Dickens, Green  Gyokuro and White Nixon. Little Dickens is wonderful at night with milk and agave or honey. The white nixon is the base for a refreshing summer cocktail with grapefruit, vodka and ginger liqueur . Here is the recipe.

Swank Table /Farm to Table Event

What is in my world...

Whether I am traveling or at home, one of my favorite things to do is to attend a local farmer's market. Every Saturday for 17 years I have gone to the West Palm Beach Green Market. I enjoy knowing where my food is from and supporting my local community.

 I remember when I first met Jodi Swank of Swank Farm. She had coolers full of the most beautiful hydroponic greens. Jodi and I have become friends after bonding every Saturday morning. Last year she shared with me a concept she had about a farm to table event.

This year I attended one of the three sold out Swank Table events. The chefs were Lindsay Autry who was a fall 2011 Top Chef contestant, Mark Militello Chef/Partner for Shaka Coconut Creek, Simon Stojanoviv Executive Chef for Altamare Restaurant Miami Beach, and their pastry chef Michelle Cabrera. In addition, two time James Beard award winner and cookbook author Judith Olney. The Swank Table event is a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon.The atmosphere was festive and the food was deliciously creative I It was so nice to dine alfresco at the farm. I am looking forward to attending more Swank Table events. [slideshow]

Zaytinya Restaurant

Jose Andre's Zaytinya.
I was at Jose's restaurant almost 10 years ago and the food was incredible. I was excited  to dine at Zaytinya this trip and was a amazed by the delicious food. It has the best turkish/greek/lebanese tapas. Jose is opening Bazaar Miami in May 2012. Bazaar L.A. has received rave reviews. The restaurant will be designed by Philippe Starck and the cuisine will be latin/asian tapa's.
Georgetown CupcakesOne can not be in Washington D.C without stopping at Georgetown Cupcakes. The salty carmel cupcake was to die for.
